"Secret Life of Plants" is a book Art has wanted to talk about for a long time. Tonight's guest, Shabari Bird, will discuss this book along with other secrets of the soil. Shabari's interest in this subject began when she was diagnosed with terminal cancer in '72 and attributes her recovery to carrot juice and an organic diet. Art asks her how do you communicate with a plant, exactly?

•3rd hour.... Art and Shabari talk about the possibility of all commercial farmers switching to organic growing and the status of the commercial farmer today. Art opens the phone lines after the bottom of the hour break.

•4th hour.... At the top of the fourth hour Art talks about the "great experiments" that have been done in the past. Art reads a fax from a listener relating to those and Shabari's story.

The research goes on! She is the director of the Christopher Bird Research Institute.

In the 1970s I read the book "Secret Life of Plants". An interesting reference was made to the research of Jagadis Bose, founder of the Bose Research Institute in Calcutta, India. I searched the antique and rare bookstore in northern New England and several University libraries for books on this with no luck.

Sir Jagadis Bose had developed a method of measuring the growth rate of plants in very short time spans. Rather than having to wait for daey, weeks, or even months to see if a change one had made in the environment or nutruition of a plant you could see the results in 15 minutes! This could be especially helpful in hydroponic growing as you could fine tune the nutrients and trace elements to get maximum growth rate.

Sir Jagadis Bose was far ahead of his time in knowledge and research. He and his institute deserve the proper recognition from the rest of the world that has been a long time coming.

Little did I know that the complete set of books of the Bose Research Institute were less than a half a mile away! I was stationed at Hanscom Air Force Base at the time. There's a great library there, the Hanscom AFB Geophysical Research Library. If you are a government employee, US military member or work for a government contractor you can get in.

One day I dropped by to check it out, and there on the second floor on a shelf near the door at the top of the front stairs found the complete set of his books. I think I was the first person to even open them as they had that new book feel.

I photo-copied the most important parts on the measurement of the growth rate of plants and filed it away.

The info sat in my filing cabinet for over 20 years until I recieved the following message. I scanned in the illustrations you see below, and will scan in the text when I get to it. It would take so long to OCR and be to big in bytes to place here as images, so I'll have to put it on a CD-ROM which I'll sell for a nominal price so I don't go broke.

I saw your article on your website about the Bose books you found in Geophysics Research Library.
I have been looking for his works for many years. I am doing research on alternative agriculture and I don't think you can get any more alternative than the crescograph. Were you actually able to get any good info on his device? I am a member of the Canadian Organic Growers here in Canada and his info may be of great benefit to the research we are doing in our association.
