The info presented here ends in the early 1900's to protect the privacy ot the living. If you wish more info, you'll have to prove to me that you are a member of the family, or have reasonable proof of a probable link. I will provide you with info for free if you have significant info to share with me.

FIRST GENERATION

1. Joshua WHEELER1 was born in 1637 in prob. in Cranefield, England. He died on Feb 4 1725 in Central Village, CT. Mark Waite, Calais and Woodbury historian, did a rather extensive study of the Wheeler line from which Joel, Julius, and Raymond were descended and was kind enough to share his findings with Doris Wheeler Gallison (and now with you via Ed Sanders). From Palinfield, CT vital records he traced the line to Isaac, son of Joshua.
In "My Gene Book-Genealogy of Wheelers", 1575 to 1981 - by Ruth Sarah Lipsey Wheeler, Doris Wheeler Gallison found a Joshua Wheeler who had a son Isaac in the correct time frame. Here it is stated that Obadiah and Sussanah Wheeler came from England to America in 1639 with their first child Joshua and settled in Concord. Seven more children were born to the couple.
On this premis, plus the fact that he was the first to start a family in America Doris Wheeler Gallison has chosen to mark Joshua as generation I of this Wheeler family line.
The following is a preface by Doris Wheeler Gallison
(as well as the above which I slightly re-worded to make sense)
from the document she researched and wrote from
which most of the Wheeler and Ainsworth information
was derived for this part of the genealogy.

This document is an attempt to collate information, pictures and related items I have found in the past few years cancerning the Wheeler family. There seemed to be too many things of interest to be ignored, yet it has become evident that there are many missing links. It is my hope that anyone who reads the following pages will contribute related items, memories and facts of the past as well as the present to make the history more complete for future generations.

And a note from Ed Sanders:

It is important to update this as events unfold such as births, deaths and marriages. I would appreciate it if those of you reading this do so.
I will forward new info to Doris Wheeler Gallison as well as the others
noted elsewhere working on Sanders/Wheeler/Brazier genealogies.
That way when I croak, the info will be available from others. Also, would
anyone else who is interested in carrying this on please contact me. You
will hopefully have an IBM compatible 386 or better computer.

It's known that Simon Shepard was the son of Howe and Amy - His birth and death dates were obtained from the gravestone in the Robinson Cemetary in Calais, VT. An East Montpelier land transfer record establishes that Simon sold land to his brother Elisha born 1/9/1809 in Royalton, VT. In examining these dates it is certainly conceivable that they had several more children. Dr. Joseph A. Denson was the Royalton doctor.
It's not known when Howe came to Calais, examination of land census records might show. They lived in the western part of town, on the Worcester road at one time. See Walling map of Washington County. Mark Waite recalls their living in Woodbury, VT in 1860 (check 1860 census).
The Gene book states they lived at one time near the Andy Scott farm east of Adamant.
Their gravestone was "erected by B.P. Wheeler", this inscription appears near the base of the stone.

The following written by Doris Wheeler Gallison:

Mrs. Alma Leonard's records say Henry was a farmer and lived about
one mile from the Robinson Cemetary in the Maple Corners, Kent
Corners area of Calais Vermont. Adeline's ancestry runs back in
Calais and further back to the first Ainsworth arrival in America.
Ainsworth genealogy written many years ago shows her as daughter
of Fordis; grandaughter of Parley and great-grand-daughter of Jacob,
whose house still stands in the Pekin section of Calais.
Henry and Adeline had eight children, all apparently born in Calais.
I (Doris) searched Woodbury, VT vital records c. 1837 to 1903 and
found
no recorded births of children born to them. Only mention of the two children,
Charles and Amanda who married Woodbury residents.
No official document has been found that indicates when Henry and
Adeline moved to East Woodbury. However The Washington County
Gazateer and Directory 1783-1889 lists the following: Woodbury - Wheeler,
Henry H. (lower Cabot address) rd. 44; 10 cows; farmer; 100 acres; leases
100 of Horace Burnham.
Claribell Gallison of Plainfield, VT possesses a scrapbook compiled by
Elsie Mann Smith. In the book I (Doris) found a newspaper clipping - June
20, 1901 - L.H. Goodell (Woodbury) is building a new house for Henry Wheeler.
I remember my father (Raymond) telling about his uncle's West and Parley
building a new house for their parents and doing some of the work themselves.
He said it was a very nice looking house but everyone wondered why they
built it where the barns cut off the beautiful view of the mountains.
Copy of an item found among a collection of newspaper clippings:
"April, 1908 - Henry Wheeler of Woodbury was watering a cow in the
manger; she raised her head and he was struck in the eye by her horn.
It is feared he has lost the sight of it. He was taken to the emergency
hospital in Barre."
Henry Howe Wheeler was on the recruiting list for the Civil War.
1862 - 28 years old; married; farmer, Calais, VT.

Alonzo owned a farm in Maple Corners village situated at the junction of
County Road and Kents Corner Road. ("My Gene Book" says he drove the Montpelier - Calais stage for many years.) After Alonzos death, Lucy and Will remained on the farm. When Will married in 1911 an apartment was made
for Lucy in the end of the house nearest the road. In a few years Will
suffered poor health and on July 4, 1919 he passed away suddenly.
Soon Alonzo's grand-nephew Julius Wheeler, son of Simon and Inda,
sold his farm in the Klondike area (farther north on County Road) and bought
Alonzo's farm. Lucy remained in the apartment until her death. She was affectionately known as "Aunt Lucy" to the neighborhood.

When Simon and Inda were married they went to live in the small house close to the Maple Corners schoolhouse (it's still there as of 1992). It was here that Julius was born. Later they moved to Kents Corner where Joel was born. (It's not known for sure which house but it may have been the Bulluck house.) After this they lived on a farm on the county road in East Montpelier. These buildings burned; were rebuilt and later lived in by Chester and Lucy Anderson, Inda's half sister. After the fire Simon and Inda went to live with her brother and wife, Irving and Nellie and family of daughters at the Robinson homestead -- reached from a road leading off the Calais-Worcester road just beyond Curtis Pond. The farm buildings, including a large brick house with white ell sets on top of a hill from which there is a magnificent view of Maple Corner Village and the mountains beyond. Raymond was born here and it was shortly after his birth that Simon and Inda purchased the Bennett farm just out of Maple Corners on the County Road toard Montpelier. There is a Cape Cod style house, painted white and with attached woodshed, horse barn and storage shed. Simon was a successful farmer, keeping his buildings in tip top shape and raising good crops for his dairy cattle, sheep, pigs, hens, and horses. He also worked on the town roads and was known as an excellent teamster. They raised their three sons here and taught them good farming practices. They also made a home for a local homeless girl, Florence Berry. During World War I Joel took over the farm. Julius had married and had his own place and Raymond was in the army. In time the couple moved to Maple Corners and lived once again in the house they occupied when first wed. They were also caretakers at different times at the Oscar Gallagher home next door.
